 Rudelsburg
Malerisch auf steilem Kalkfelsen liegt die heutige Ruine der
Rudelsburg über der Saale. Ihre Ersterwähnung fand
sie 1172. Von der weiträumigen Vorburg sind nur noch Teile
eines Rundturms, der Toranlage und Reste der Außenmauer
erkennbar. Westlich befindet sich ein tief in den Fels gehauener
Halsgraben. Dahinter beginnt die Kernburg. |
Rudelsburg
Castle
The present ruin of the Rudelsburg Castle is picturesquely situated
on top of steep limestone hills high above the Saale river. It
was first mentioned in the records in 1172. Parts of a round tower, the gates and remnants of the outer wall are all that
have survived of the spacious barbican. On the western side there
is a neck ditch which is cut deep into the rock. Beyond this
stands the core castle. |

Saaleck
Im Zusammenwirken mit der benachbarten Rudelsburg diente Burg
Saaleck als sogenannte Sperrburg. Der Bau der Hauptburg erfolgte
vermutlich in der 1. Hälfte des 11. Jh. Der Westturm war
der eigentliche Wohnturm, worauf der im ursprünglichen Eingangsgeschoss
befindliche romanische Kamin hinweist. |
Saaleck
Castle
In conjunction with its neighbour Rudelsburg Castle Saaleck Castle
served as a so-called 'barrier castle'. The main castle was presumably
built in the first half of the 11th century. The western tower
was the actual residential tower, as indicated by the Romanesque
open fireplace in the original ground floor. |

Haus
Der romanische Bau stammt aus dem 11. Jh. und gehört zu
den ältesten Profanbauten Deutschlands. Das Erdgeschoß
hat 24 kleine Rundbogenfenster und der Dachraum rundbogige Schlitze
unterhalb der Mauerkrone. Über der Südostpforte befindet
sich ein monolithes Tympanon mit Bischofskreuz. |
Romanesque
House
This Romanesque building dates back to the 11th century and is
one of the oldest secular buildings in Germany. There are 24
small semicircular arched windows in the ground floor, as well
as semicircular arched slots below the masonry wall crown in
the roof storey. Above the south eastern gate door there is a
monolithic tympanon with a bishop's cross.
